5 Grief Books for Children

Deal and loss can be difficult for a well-adjusted adult who can appropriately verbalize emotions. Expressing grief can be a struggle for children due to the loss itself but also due to not having the words or verbal capacity to express what is being felt inside. Bibliotherapy, or a selected group of books or reading materials to guide an individual through a specific journey.


To guide or aid you in your journey with your child, I have the following books on grief or loss:


  1. The Invisible String by Patricia Karst. A book on separation anxiety, loss, and grief. It can be found here.

  2. The Sad Dragon: A Dragon Book About Grief and Loss. A Cute Children Story To Help Kids Understand The Loss Of A Loved One, and How To Get Through Difficult Time. (My Dragon Books) by Steve Herman. It can be found here and is on dealing with death.

  3. The Goodbye Book by Todd Parr. A simple and wonderfully illustrated book about losing a close friend and having to say goodbye. It can be found here.

  4. The Memory Book: A Grief Journal for Children and Families (Memory Box). This is a book the entire family can do together as a way to remember and celebrate the life of someone or a pet that is missed. It can be found here.
